About 75-90 minutes into the 2023 iRacing ROAR event cars started disappearing and after about a lap of that I got collected by a GT4 car near start/finish which effectively ended my race. I sought to continue but the problem persisted so I had little choice but to park it, I was too much of a hazard.
Testing afterwards with AI, I noticed that the "C" (CPU) component of iRacing diagnostic overlay
was in the red when I had the problem with "S" in the red (disconnect imminent) soon after.
At the time, I had used Task Manager which showed "Works Calendar" using something like 30-50% of the CPU.
Yesterday, I was reminded of that at the right time and I dug into it finding that Works Calendar is a known problem. Win10 gave me the option to Uninstall but Uninstall did not work. Three failed attempts later, I tried simply deleting MS Works which was not allowed because it was in use (or whatever) which led me to the Startup tab in Task Manager where I was able to disable it along with at least one other bloatware apps and then delete all traces of MS Works that I could find.
Somewhere along the way, I was reminded that I installed MS Works 2000 from disc sometime between the 2022 Daytona 24 and the 2023 ROAR. IIRC, the installer complained about one thing or another and MS Works spreadsheet didn't work.
I am hopeful that I can again enter races with large fields, will test soon with a large grid of AI.
For years, the only apps that I installed on my race PC were directly connected to sim racing but I've been needing a Win10 PC for more and more day to day tasks so my race PC has been compromised in that way.
