Unofficial races are official series races that don't meet the minimum entrants requirement to be a ranked race.
The minimum entrants is typically 6.
While iRating isn't scored, Safety Rating IS but at a lower multiplier (might be 0.35 vs 1.00).
The unofficial races are a good way to practice starts but not a great way to bolster Safety Rating, takes too many laps.

I cost myself a chunk of SR this afternoon signing up for an Advanced Mazda race that I believed would go Unofficial.
I was distracted with my new wheel and some game settings that I lost through deleting the app.ini file and was far too casual about keeping the car on the track.
I rang up a 10X and lost 0.24 SR without accomplishing much other than getting a somewhat dubious fuel number and discovering that my pit menu defaults need to change.

I may stand corrected on this one as far as Safety Rating. The results had me losing 0.24 but my SR number hasn't changed and is still A4.98 two hours later.
