Week 3
Sept 28, 2021 6:53:37 GMT
Post by tomlory on Sept 28, 2021 6:53:37 GMT
Yay, off to a continuation of last weekend.
I sat down to preview the offerings for this week. Soltice and Mustang @ Phoenix roval and Cadillac @ Hungaroring.
First impression of Phoenix was "giant autocross course". After maybe 10 laps it was "funnest autocross course". After some more laps and some setup work with the Mustang, it started to feel like a proper track.
The Cadillac is good @ Hungaroring. I don't know that I'd risk a race as I can't seem to chill out and move 6 inches safer on corner exit curbing but we could have fun lapping together.
Entered a Sim Labs race with the Solstice thinking that I'd be alone but ended up with three of us qualified within a few tenths of a second.
Had a great incident-free race until the Jettas and Mazdas came through. Jetta forcing its way past then losing it in front of me bashed in the front of my car and started the incident cascade with a 4X. I let P2 by as I was slow on the straight only a matter of time. Then the fucking P3 Miata driver clipped my left front as he went past getting on the banking so now my steering and handling where fucked. Pushed off the track just enough to get dinged more times than I can count. DQ'ed when another Miata inexplicably inserted himself in a bad place and we touched. From a confident but not certain first place with zero incidents to a DQ. Down to 1.49 and 1465. Had a great race with good to race with drivers for over 15 minutes.
I can't risk another race with the way things are going I'll be back to a C license so I'm going to have to do hundreds of laps of time trial or something.

21 and 23 laps of Time Trial @ Phoenix roval both paid +0.15 Safety Rating with zero incidents. 18 laps netted 0.13. So you can gain 0.30 in less than hour barring any mishaps. Not a bad deal.

Yeah, it sounded good to jump into races maybe subliminally because of Efnet Fun Races but obviously it's been a disaster for basically each of us.
I'd like to try getting everyone on the same page with the iRacing series of the week and maximize our fun in a public iRacing practice server or on our own paid by the hour iRacing server / room.
It, of course, gets difficult because of the varying content between us, unlike rF2 where everybody had everything or it was a link and a download away but this week at least is easy, Sim Lab @ Phoenix is all base content. A paid room would reduce the content question but then we have to dream up which car and which track.

Week 3
Sept 30, 2021 3:21:37 GMT
Post by tomlory on Sept 30, 2021 3:21:37 GMT
Did a Time Trial with the Mustang FR500S and another race with the Soltice, both @ Phoenix per the Sim Lab schedule.
I was on pole with only two of us in the Pontiacs. When Crackhead started slaloming on the formation lap, I dropped well behind him with zero trust in him and not much in the 30+ Miatas on the grid. I think that there were 3 or 4 multicar incidents on Lap 1, minefield with cars scattered everywhere.
I escaped a big scare by inches later in the race when a car drove across the track, up the banking from the infield after an apparent spin and escaped the race as a whole with 1 incident point (wheel off watching my mirror). I still have some maintenance to do but with work and some luck it feels like I can get back to where I was a week ago with both of my numbers.
I think that the Miatas would be the best car for a group of us @ Phoenix. The Soltice is fine and a great car to learn the track with but it's too slow to have much fun hot lapping with. I really like the Mustang but it's paid content that all of us probably don't have, which makes it more of a shame that iRacing doesn't have a process for drive-before-you-buy because I think that most of our core group would enjoy it, too.

Forgive me for being all over the spectrum but I was reminded that the SCCA Spec Racer Ford is pretty great and might be a class where there are proper racers more often than not.
SRF lap time seems to be 1-2 seconds quicker than the Global MX-5 Miata.
SFR is at Red Bull Ring this week.
Disappointed that I overlooked Road Atlanta last week.

A bunch of time trials, three races with the Soltice, one with the Mustang FR500S @ Phoenix roval and one with Spec Racer Ford @ Red Bull Ring and my safety rating is rehabilitated.
I had 4X contact in the Sim lab race driving the Mustang with the leader of Mazda class when we were blindly side by side, neither of us yielded and we both needed the same space on the track. Damage to the respective sides of our cars but seemingly drove fine for the few laps that remained.
The SFR was the funnest to practice with with Coffey and Hutton, probably the Sim Lab race with the Mustang was the most enjoyable and the Mustang was probably the most fun to practice with alone.
End of week rating B / 3.91 / 1613.

Week 3

Another post got me interested in where I stand against other drivers with the various cars from this week.
Based on qualifying times for a number of reasons.
Pontiac Soltice @ Phoenix: (1:11.449) = 357/4740 (92.5) (big variable is that this car was given more grip for 2021 Season 4) Ford Mustang FR500S @ Phoenix: (1:07.034) = 450/1819 (75.3) SCCA Spec Racer Ford @ Red Bull Ring: (1:48.406) = 137/740 (81.5)
My result with the Mustang is especially disappointing as I did more laps with it that any other car this week.
