I got into my first online races last night. The first one was at Sapang, jumped into a Qualy session with Pat and another driver, by the time the race started we had 10 in the server for a 15min race. I Q'd 3 but ended up losing spots on the first lap to 6th. From there I had some great tight racing with 5th and 7th, all of us swapping spots till a lap or two to go when got back to 5th and held it. Pat had just jumped in first time on RR3 so it' didn't go as well for him, needs to still setup some things.
The 2nd race I did after Pat got off was NSU's at Brands Hatch Indy, I Q'd 2nd but lost spots again, ran 4th and 5th out of 6. Again had some really close good racing.
All in all a good experience, a little bit of some jumpy video when close due to higher pings from Europe. The tires would come in good and near the end they would get a little pushy slipping. I did no setups and think they were fixed anyways.

Tried a 911 Carrera Cup race on Saturday night at Laguna Seca. My first time driving the car more than a lap, so was interesting. I qualyed 4th out of 6 in the race, I started to get the hang of the car and finished 2nd. Fun car but it is definitely a historic car. I'll try it again maybe this week.

Entered some more races last night with a Lotus Elige GT4 and then Audi TT, certainly not a cake walk. The cars are very divable but like the other sims you have to be clean to do good. So I'm trying to run ranked servers and I'm rookie class right now, next up is D class. So you get dinged for spins off track and hitting things like walls, cars, ect. they result in incident points (iRacing safety X's), max of 40 per race and last night one race I got 20. You also get reputation value ( iRacing I Rating) and is based on number of participants, starting and finishing position and maybe incident points. I entered a race that had no one else in it hoping more would come in before the race started like has had happened before, no such luck. So ran the race anyway by myself thinking I'd get an increase, nope no participants so 0 increase.

So on Saturday nights I've been trying to do RaceRoom and then Sunday nights do iRacing. Usually Saturday nights I can get in a couple of races with at least 6 others. Last Saturday no one was on the ranked servers and the other servers were a little sparse.
So running both of these sims only one night a week is not ideal to get better at either one but still puts me in a position to evaluate them. So sympathizing with Tom and his frustrations of iRacing I have to say overall enjoyment of driving and racing I preferer RaceRoom. But I haven't been in a field 20+ racers yet, so may be similar to iRacing

Last weekend I did a little investigating by logging in at various times of the day to look at participation on the servers and more so the ranked servers. So late morning and afternoon a couple of servers were nearly full, 29 out of 30 spots. and other servers with a good 10 to 18 participants. Early evening there were less people but still a good number in the servers. So looks like when I'm stuck indoors this winter on the weekends I may find some good size races to enter, largest I've been in so far is 12. For the most part when I get on at 10PM central it's a ghost town with maybe a max of 5 at any time in a race.
This just confirms that RaceRoom is Euro centric, I still need to investigate some of the American leagues I found online.

Last night with it being rainy and colder I wasn't going to be doing anything but hang out inside, my wife was also working some OT. So decided to check out getting into a race with a larger field. I entered one, GT3 at Suzuka I used the my GT3 Camaro. There was 25 entries and I qualified 14th having never raced the car before and changing the setup in practice, qualy and before the race. I did get it to be more drivable. The start looked like maybe 4-5 guys didn't take the grid behind me and got passed by 15th going into turn 1. I was just trying to find my pace and hang with the guys ahead, gained a couple of spots when others went off on the first lap. Going into turn 1 on lap 2 someone ahead was sitting sideways in the middle of the turn, I checked up seeing which way they were going to move, slammed on the brakes to tuck inside. My tires locked up and ended up T-boning them sending me off track. Well now my hood was so bent up I could not see the track and tried to limp around to the pits but only made it a few corners and quit, not drivable at all.
That really sucked, I think I could have made up a few positions in the 20 minute race and was fun with so many on track. At the same time there was another race going with 26 guys and a 90 minute race. So the potential is here, just not at the time of day that I would normally have time to race, in the winter I may be able to race when I get home from work instead.

On Saturday late afternoon it was snowing and cold so I decided to run some RaceRoom. A bunch of ranked rooms with 20+ racers. I entered 3 different races and did ok, lot more fun with more racers. The other thing is the race rooms run continuously, so usually after you finish a race and back out on the server list page you can find another one that starts in a short bit.
Going to try and run the Wednesday night big weekly race on the American server, they usually get 13 to 20 guys for that, starts about 7 my time I think.

Earlier this week with the lousy weather I finally got on in the afternoon when the servers have lots more people on. First race was GT4 with the Lotus, 27 people for the start. I qualyed 21st and at the start got passed by most of who was behind me. The leaders were about 4 seconds lap faster then me, I find the car a little harder to drive fast. Ended up finishing 16th more so from others having issues and me staying on track out of trouble.
Entered another race, 20mins at Stowe. Not sure I've ever raced on this track, didn't feel familiar. At least this time the it was a better car to drive fast but jumped in late in Qualy so only had one timed lap and try to learn track. It's a small track multiple chicanes and couple of hairpins. I qualyed 4th out of only 8 racers. At the start I managed to get into 3rd with 4th on back a good distance back. First and second were just gone, on the first lap 4th decided he was going to be 3rd by cutting the chicanes and hairpin, I eventually caught back up to him as he started going wide in corners then he got DQ'd. So now I was running a comfortable 3rd for the first half of race. Eventually 4th caught up to me, very respectful racing. The last lap we had caught up to 2nd and the last corner as I was setting up to pass 2nd, 4th did a great inside pass but ended up right in front of me and I tapped him wide so I finished 3rd, felt bad about it though. Oh and first place lapped the whole field, wow!
I'll try to do more of the afternoon races with the large fields.
