I have the paint process figured out well enough to make a decent skin.
The main body paint process is as we're used to from rF1 and rF2.
A twist is that there is also a REGION file that is a map for where to apply textures (chrome, matte carbon fiber, shiny carbon fiber, matte paint, car paint, etc). Because our skins are really modding an existing car, the REGION map was causing the various textures to appear on my custom skin, ie, had the gopher or whatever that thing is appear as a glossier part of my magenta paint.
I tried to make my own REGION file but it didn't seem to work or I didn't know enough at the time.
The gopher is mapped in the region as WHITE so in the editor Livery Materials "White" I had to set the material to the same as the BLACK area so that the gopher wouldn't be visible.
Material is basically gloss. You can also change colors but the most basic is to set the Livery Materials as desired.
In the example above, I set all regions to Car Paint except for the red areas which are Matte Carbon Fiber.
I found that the easiest way to see the various regions without benefit of the map is to set each to Chrome one by one and see what is affected.
Changes that you make with the editor are saved in a JSON file in Player / Settings / Whichever Car. Simply delete that JSON to get back to what you started with.
The editor works with stock skins, too.
