I realized that when attempting to load Portland last night with 32 AI that my 8 GB of RAM was at 98% utilization. The track never loaded. Graphics setting on the high end if not maximum.
My PC is about 10 years old so 16 GB is the maximum that I can install with four sockets.
I ordered 4GB of RAM (~$15) that should be here by Friday. 8GB was ~$30 so if need be I can buy 4GB more for the same overall cost. Theoretically, that extra 4GB should drop the load to about 66% which seems okay. I'll remove any and all programs that I don't need in case they have associated processes running.
Tonight, I dialed it back to 19 AI. Portland loaded but was malfunctional, very slow from garage to race, choppy and horrible frame rate with 19 AI on the grid. The replay was bad, too.
It's feeling like insufficient RAM is also why I was only able to join the official Studio 397 server once with the Radical "whatever its called" and Nordschleife.. The load time was over 5 minutes (which triggers a timeout on their server) with the same behavior that I was experiencing when loading Portland and 19 AI.
It would make sense that the S397 cars have larger file sizes than anything that we've tested before. Probably compounding my problem is that Portland has a large file size (as does, of course, Nordschleife).
I haven't experienced any problems with <10 of us on the track from the first test races through the most recent ones, including Portland.
In a way, it is useful for me to have a barely adequate system; if cars and tracks work for me, I expect that everyone else will be okay. A new PC for me isn't going to happen this winter.
